| Flood, feast and famine in Mozambique
In contrast to the unkempt appearance of the villagers in Bilene-Mundial, both mother and daughter have their hair carefully braided. Carolina wears a rather formal purple jacket; Rosita is dressed in a freshly laundered leopard-design top, neat jeans and white sandals with a bow. Several in their community have criticised Carolina's family for being "too Westernised"; Rosita and her sister, Celina, 12, and brother Benedito, 10, have been seen in OshKosh trousers and Winnie The Pooh trainers. Many of these items were given to Carolina and Rosita during a two-week visit to the US in 2000 - where I first met her - a bizarre promotional tour organised by the Mozambique embassy in Washington, DC, and paid for by an African-American charity. In meetings with politicians, businessmen, church leaders, charity organisers and the media, Carolina and her "miracle baby" helped to raise awareness of the scale of the relief and redevelopment work still needed in Mozambique, and to generate funds both for the Government and her family.
Writers' strike among film's defining moments of 2007: AFI
The Hollywood writers' strike topped the American Film Institute's year-end list of events having an impact on the world of film. A 13-member AFI jury of film scholars, artists and critics also highlighted the deaths of Ingmar Bergman and Michelangelo Antonioni and the "hyper-tabloidization" of television news as "moments of significance" for 2007. Swedish movie director Ingmar Bergman, right, is seen on the set of Fanny and Alexander with Sven Nyqvist, chief cameraman. The deaths of Bergman and Michelangelo Antonioni mark the end of an era, the AFI said.(Associated Press) The writers' strike, which has sidelined 22,000 U.S. film and TV writers, "may be a defining event in shaping the future," the AFI jury said. The strike by members of the Writers Guild of American began Nov.
All gay all the time
Hutchinson noted that, when the issue was raised in a debate in Little Rock Tuesday night between the two candidates, Beebe either misrepresented the facts or does not understand the law when he claimed that he could not get involved in the case as Attorney General. "The purpose of debates is for candidates to clarify their positions so that voters can make informed decisions on Election Day, but my opponent dodged some of the most important questions raised last night," Hutchinson said. "Mike Beebe has made a pattern and practice of side-stepping questions about his record on the issues and, in this case, flat-out misrepresenting the facts on the gay foster care case." In the debate, Hutchinson criticized Beebe for ducking a lawsuit filed by the ACLU challenging the constitutionality of the state’s policy banning gay foster care.
AC360°: Flirting with disaster
If you believe, as I do, that it is critical to the future of the globe that the U.S. become once again a power to whom others turn with respect and for leadership, we need to pull ourselves back up.We don't need to be the world's only superpower -- we have to respect the right of others to share join leadership -- but it will be a much more threatening world for our kids and grandkids if others rise and we continue on a downhill slope. .

Report: New Kids On The Block Reuniting
The five members of the once-popular U.S. band New Kids on the Block reportedly are reuniting 24 years after the Hangin' Tough group first formed. An unidentified source said Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, and Danny Wood, along with brothers Jordan and Jonathan Knight, are prepared to make a musical comeback together, People magazine reported in an exclusive Saturday. .
Big in Egypt
The film received mixed reviews, but Arai remembers that the British newspapers lauded his performance. “They said that I changed the image of the stereotype Japanese, which was surprising because I played a stereotype Japanese! So I don't know what the critics saw in my performance. Maybe some humanity? Anyway, I was very pleased with this experience because I enjoyed being an actor more than a musician." But nothing was as fun as working with director Steven Spielberg. “I always dreamt of working with Spielberg, and when I heard he was making a movie about Japan I told myself, ‘It's now or never.' When he came to London preparing to shoot Empire of the Sun in 1987, I managed to get a copy of the script through a very well connected friend. But when I read it, I realized that there was no character for me to play.
Flushing Them Out
She can't leave her house to buy groceries; she's heard that the sheriff stations deputies at Food City. Daniela lives down the street from a drug dealer, not a safe environment for a young family. She knows the guy's name, his address and she's seen him do business. But she can't call the police — they might take her away. She's learned how to walk quietly, to stay in the shadows. The only place Daniela allows herself to go is her children's elementary school. She volunteers there six hours a day. She says it's her responsibility to be active in her children's education. But when she walks to school (she won't drive, ever) she makes sure to go with one of her few friend or her kids. "You can't walk alone because if you are walking alone and you get taken, who is going to tell your family you are gone?" she says.
