Asia prospects, free downloads stir MIDEM music mart
Executives gathered for the music industry's largest gathering were hoping Sunday that new legal and free music download services and the blossoming Chinese market mean there is light at the end of the tunnel. This year's 42nd MIDEM, the global music industry's largest annual event, got off to a better than expected start Sunday with claims that new revenue streams needed to replace plummeting CD sales were finally starting to appear. "There is still a lot of pain but also a lot of hope, value and talent, particularly in music," Jean-Bernard Levy, CEO Universal Music Group's parent company, entertainment conglomerate Vivendi SA, told a MidemNet conference on the eve of the MIDEM opening. Levy's upbeat statement was music to the ears of the 9,000 movers and shakers of the music and digital technology worlds crowded into this chic Riviera seaside resort for the five-day trade show.
Students Raise $30,000 For Wounded Classmate
OAKLAND, Calif. -- The family of an Oakland boy paralyzed by a bullet fired in a robbery will be getting thousands of dollars to put towards a wheelchair van and other equipment thanks to the boy's classmates. What started as a bake sale is expanding into a community fundraising effort, with fifth graders at Oakland's Crocker Highlands Elementary School so far raising $30,000 to donate to the family of ten-year-old Christopher Rodriguez. Christopher was left paralyzed from the waste down when a bullet went through a wall of a music school where he was taking piano lessons last week. Dr. Jacob Neufeld a pediatric physician at Children's Hospital Oakland, where Christopher Rodriguez is in fair condition in the intensive care unit following the shooting incident at a music school said Christopher would remain hospitalized indefinitely and then will undergo therapy aimed at teaching him how do things on his own.
Rock royalty to meet glamour queens at Berlinale
The Rolling Stones and Madonna will rub shoulders with Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johansson as next month's Berlin Film Festival spotlights music in cinema, its director said in an interview. Berlinale chief Dieter Kosslick said the match-up of rock and pop royalty with the big screen's hottest stars promised one of the glitziest years on the red carpet in the event's 58-year history. Luring Oscar winner Martin Scorsese and the self-proclaimed world's greatest rock'n'roll band to Berlin for the premiere of their concert film "Shine A Light" was a triumph even Kosslick first thought was too good to be true. "It's a major coup," the 59-year-old told AFP. "They had to trust us as a festival that we would know how to handle a premiere of this calibre.
Memo to Giants: Shut your Big Blue mouths before the Super Bowl!
When the Giants take off for Arizona Monday, someone should hand each player a card containing five things not to say when speaking to the SRO crowd of notebooks and microphones. 1)Don't guarantee anything. 2)Don't say the Patriots cheated. 3)Don't say the Patriots "really aren't" that good. 4)Don't say our road to the Super Bowl was tougher than theirs. 5)Don't say our receiving corps is as good as theirs. Oh, Plaxico Burress already said that. In the media spotlight, the Giants, under the direction of Tom Coughlin, have done a good job of staying focused throughout this playoff run. The bulbs start getting brighter Monday. The chances of any real news coming out of a Super Bowl site are always slim.
