The Internet might be changing the way that people get their news, but television is still king. That's one result from a new Pew study into the Internet's role in the 2008 US presidential campaign. Unfortunately for television executives, though, TV's viewership is dropping steadily, while the Internet and National Public Radio are posting solid gains. 60 percent of all Americans still use the television as their major news source for following the various campaigns. That dwarfs the 15 percent of people who say that the Internet is their main source, but it's also down 8 points from the 2004 campaign. .

For those who haven't been following along, rock critics have crowned a new World's Greatest Band. While U2 has transitioned into the revered-granddaddy stage of its career, and Radiohead has essentially bowed out by getting all arty and difficult, consensus has formed around Arcade Fire, whose second album, Neon Bible, has garnered even more acclaim than its ferociously adored 2004 debut, Funeral. Arcade Fire's members are unlikely rock heroes. They are Canadian (from Montreal) and co-ed (five men and two women, led by the husband-and-wife team of Win Butler and Régine Chassagne). There's seven of them—nine when they play live. They sometimes sing in French. They wear unfashionably dowdy clothes—if American Gothic is your idea of goth, then Butler is a goth. Their songs make prominent use of violin, accordion, hurdy gurdy, and other instruments not typically found in the ass-kicking rock 'n' roller's arsenal.

Matsushita join with Google for web on the box
Matsushita Electric Industrial, the owner of Panasonic, is working on a deal with internet giant Google to develop televisions that display internet content such as photographs and videos. The deal represents the next stage in the integration of the internet with television, following similar deals by Matsushita's rival television maker Sony. Panasonic will launch the TVs that will allow users to access videos directly on Google's YouTube video website, in North America this spring. Users will also be able to browse photos on the search engine's photo service Picasa Web Albums. Matsushita said: "This is the first time mainstream consumers will be able to easily enjoy YouTube videos from the living room with the enhanced quality of a fully integrated widescreen TV." .

Band members going their separate ways to produce their own music sounded like a good idea, says Molotov's singer Paco Ayala. That is, until it came down to actually doing it. "That was the hardest. At first, songs weren't coming to me," Ayala said. "The only thing that came to me was the EP title, 'El Plan de Ayala.' After three months I knew I was in trouble. Then slowly the tunes started coming to me. The first one was 'Que No Me Moleste Nadie' ('Don't Let Anyone Bother Me'), and it talked precisely about how hard it is to write a song." Written with tongue in cheek, the tune starts with only acoustic guitars before launching into Molotov's signature heavy-metal crunch. Earlier this year, Molotov members announced they were separating so that each member of the foursome could produce his own EP.

The young and the rowdy – and those who have all day to sleep – should head east to Hollywood Blvd and the Cahuenga Corridor for the newest, most energized late-night clubs.
