Yahoo! searching for a bigger slice of the pie

With all the focus on the Google versus Microsoft fight, the third major online search player, Yahoo!, has been quietly revamping its technology to take on its mighty opponents.

Yahoo! Search product management vice-president Tim Mayer sees one particular area where there's room to innovate and claim the pole position.

That's the ability to answer tricky queries that require a subjective assessment, rather than an objective answer.

Intelligent handling of subjective search queries has long been the holy grail of search engine technology, Mr Mayer says.

"If you type in 'cool lamps' into a search engine, what's cool is being influenced by marketers and search engine optimisation people. It is not influenced by what is actually cool and interesting," Mr Mayer says.

R. Kelly Case Still Moving At A Snail's Pace; Plus Wu-Tang Clan, Paula ...

Nearly six years after the alleged sex tape first surfaced, the court proceedings in the R. Kelly case continue to move at a snail's pace. The prosecutors originally sought to have testimony from one expert witness, Dr. Sharon Cooper, cover several different areas — the age of the girl on the tape based on forensic pediatrics, the identification of the man on the tape based on the vein pattern on his hands, and the behavior profile of the girl based on the psychology of child sex-abuse victims. Judge Vincent Gaughan had previously ruled that Dr. Cooper could testify about the victim's age, but not the behavior profile, so prosecutors had asked him to reconsider. At a hearing on Monday (January 14), Gaughan ruled once again that Dr. Cooper would not be able to testify about why the girl in the case would deny that she was a victim, or how common denial is in sex-abuse cases.

Arkansas HS team returns to court 2 nights after player's death

The bus ride down had been a serious one, except when a stop at Burger King brought about some pleasant banter.

"Any time we stop to eat, he's the first one off the bus," Flanigan said of Hobbs. "So we had one joke about that, and that was it."

Parkview has a rich basketball tradition. Los Angeles Lakers guard Derek Fisher went there, and the school has won 10 state championships. On this night, though, the Patriots needed more support than ever.

They were allowed an extra bus for family members and fans, and although the visitors' side of the gym was far from full, the Parkview players seemed comfortable with the surroundings. In fact, they appeared relieved to have a few hours alone — far away from their grief-stricken school.

"I'm sure if we were at home, it would have been more emotional," senior Trey Finn said.

Managing Technology Lights! Camera! Sales!

Online video has become a daily fix for millions of people. Now entrepreneurs are starting to cash in on that obsession.

Consider Valentina Trevino. The 29-year-old Chicago artist and filmmaker regularly posts videos on YouTube, showing how she created a painting and what it means to her -- and musing quirkily on a host of matters. In one clip, she ruminates about the strange connection between the ballerinas in Edgar Degas's art and Britney Spears's custody battles.

Deepak Chopra Leads Me on a Journey Into Consciousness

I have been following the work and teachings of Dr. Deepak Chopra since the mid-nineties when I first heard him speak about the power of the mind to generate healthy cells thereby eliminating many localized and systemic illnesses in the human body. Deepak Chopra was explaining his theories to another strong influence of mine, self help icon Anthony Robbins. This was back in 1997, and although Dr. Chopra’s ideas and explanations sounded like music to my ears, I was still a bit hazy on the logistics of how these reactions actually take place within the body. At the time I was just vaguely becoming aware of the mind/body connection and holistic healing. One thing I knew for sure is that I wanted to learn more about what would later be largely attributed to the science of quantum physics (think "The Secret").
