Startups Rush to Pave Way for Web Video

The intended recipient gets an e-mail with a link. Clicking it starts the download, which pulls the chunks together from the network of user computers like a squid pulling in its tentacles.

In other words, Squidcast itself doesn't need to devote computers or buy bandwidth to transfer user's files. It will finance the service by showing short video ads to the recipients while they download.

"If someone attempted to do this as a hosted platform they would simply go out of business," Putterman said. "It can't be done and that's why it hasn't been done."

Atlanta-based Asankya Inc. is trying to solve the same problem, but for Hollywood rather than home movies. CEO Scott Ryan puts the current cost of distributing an HD movie online at about $3. Considering movies rent for $4 to $5 and the creators have to be paid, there's no real money in it for distributors.

Apple Reduces Prices on iTunes Songs Without Anti-Copying Software

Apple Inc. is reducing the price of all songs on its iTunes Store without anti-copying software to 99 cents from $1.29, bringing Apple's prices on such tracks closer to those offered by Amazon.com Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and other rivals in online music.

In an interview, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said music on iTunes Plus – the portion of Apple's online music store featuring songs without digital rights management, or DRM, anti-copying ...

ORU alumni support sought

Uncertainty remained Saturday about what effect Richard Roberts' resignation as president will have on Oral Roberts University, but some observers said it was a step toward improvement.

"I think people are going to be waiting and watching: OK, can it survive without a Roberts at the helm?" said Donald R. Vance, professor of biblical languages and literature.

Vance said he thinks alumni need to support ORU as it undergoes this transition, after being led for 42 years by a Roberts. ORU professors are committed to the school's evangelical Christian mission, but that might not be obvious without a TV minister as president, he said. Christian colleges across the country are led by non-ministers -- "it will just be different for us."

ORU leaders have not addressed what role, if any, Roberts will have at the university.

A perfect storm of banned words for 2008

Break out those dictionaries and get the Wite-out handy. Or, more appropriately, prepare to scold a newscaster, blogger or congressman.

Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., recently released its list of banished words for 2008. The annual collection, culled from submissions gathered throughout the year, derives mostly from government jargon or "creative" media pundits who are actually just being annoying.I agree with many of the cited 19 words and phrases. Like "perfect storm," which Lynn Allen from Warren, Mich., said is "overused by the pundits on evening TV shows to mean just about any coincidence." Very true, Lynn. Suddenly, the phrase is used to describe anything. If the trees are green, Jimmy wears a blue shirt and flowers sprout, it's the "perfect storm" to create a nice spring day."Webinar," a corporate term to describe a seminar on the Web, made the list.

Drobo USB storage

Only then can you safely delete your culled files and reclaim drive space, assured in the knowledge that you have a backup safely tucked away. This still leaves you with a basic problem: keeping track of the particular DVD that contains a certain file or group of related project files. A cataloguing utility such as DiskTracker ( ) goes a long way toward helping you manage your backups, but wouldn't life be much simpler if you didn't have to keep reshuffling your data every time you were poised to run out of disk space?

The Drobo external USB storage device allows you to do exactly that, within limits. When you're at the very precipice of running out of drive space, you can add a new drive, and the Drobo will deftly merge it with your existing storage pool without any need for further intervention on your part.

Greenpeace demands urgent action to tackle Amazon deforestation crisis

In July 2006, multinational soya traders agreed to a two year moratorium on buying soya from newly deforested land in the Amazon (3). Greenpeace demands that the soya industry not only complies with the moratorium, but deepen and extend their commitment to it.

ENDS

Notes to Editor

1. Effective measures to tackle deforestation include mapping rural properties and ownership; curbing illegal occupation of public land; harsh penalties for illegal deforestation; driving development to areas away from the rainforest; increasing support to sustainable activities.

2. The preliminary figures come from a satellite system (DETER) which is used to track where deforestation is happening, rather than measure deforestation rates.

Ryerson buys Sam the Record Man property

Ryerson University revealed Friday that it has purchased Sam the Record Man's iconic former location at the corner of Yonge and Gould streets, as well as three additional properties, to accommodate a planned expansion.

The university's plan is to use the properties to provide more student study space and other programming.

Ryerson bought the Sam's property directly from the Sniderman family, along with two additional properties the family owned on the Ryerson campus: a small office building at 110 Bond Street and a parking lot on the west side of Church Street north of Dundas Street.

Seven spas within driving distance of Atlanta

New Year's resolutions often involve self-improvement: Losing weight, reducing stress, or simply resolving to relax. One way to jump-start a "new you" is to take a spa vacation.

If you're a spa lover, you're familiar with the amazing benefits. If you've never been to a spa, basically guests are pampered, prodded, and primped, and in the end, not only are they transformed externally, but internally — emotionally — as well. They're less stressed and more relaxed.
