Get set for 'Bossa Rocks' concert

Sitti: Our very first mandarin show would be the best for me, because of the really nice song selection. We did three medleys there -- Carpenters', Sergio Mendes', and an OPM (Original Philippines Music) medley composed of songs of Regine (Velasquez), Lani (Misalucha), Zsa Zsa (Padilla), and Kuh (Ledesma), all bossafied. I also sang "Lisa Pa Lamang" in that show.

Kitchie: Unheard-of provinces in the Philippines and countries I've never been before, and yet hearing them singing my songs in different languages and dialect accents.

B: What song seems to be a favorite among your fans?

Sitti: "Para Sa Akin," my first original contribution to OPM.

Kitchie: "Huwag na huwag mong sasabihin," "Same Ground," "Bulong."

B: Sitti, what do you like best, singing, acting, emceeing or modeling?

Sitti: Singing.

Rockin' round the stove

To any home cook who rocks out to a vegetable-prep soundtrack, the idea that music can inspire great food is nothing new. But a few recent and forthcoming cookbooks - I Like Food, Food Tastes Good (Hyperion, 2007); Lost in the Supermarket (Soft Skull, 2008); Please Feed Me: A Punk Vegan Cookbook (Soft Skull, 2004) - are tweaking the idea for indie-rock fans: They're betting on the fact that, in certain circles, a Thai sweet-potato soup is actually more tempting when it's made by the members of the band Belle and Sebastian. Lately, it seems, indie rock has been mixing with food in surprisingly high-profile ways. Last year, Alex Kapranos, onetime chef and lead singer of the U.K. pop group Franz Ferdinand, released a memoir of his meals on the road called Sound Bites. On Dinner With the Band, an Internet show hosted by New York chef and musician Sam Mason, indie groups visit to play a few songs and help Mason in the kitchen.

Michael Bublé: Dark side of the croon

The last time I sat down to talk to Michael Bublé was in 2003. We hit it off immediately. Him: an eager-to-please wedding singer turned recording artist promoting his debut album. Me: a fresh-faced intern on my first big assignment for the Straight. I remember spending endless hours prepping for my interview, listening to every nuance of every croonified cover on that CD.

It paid off. Our Q & A session turned into an afternoon adventure, with me tagging along for part of his Van City junket. No question was off-limits. We laughed; he cried (well, almost—if you want a Barbara Walters moment with the Bubster, ask him about his gramps). I was really feelin' the all-access love.

Two CDs later, it's a different story. For starters, there were no advance copies of his third full-length studio album, Call Me Irresponsible, released in May 2007.
